The fire at the eight storey block of flats in Longbridge was caused by water flooding into the switchgear room from a third storey flat and so triggering an explosion so violent that it destroyed the mains cable. The neighbouring flat – and all the flats in the block – were protected by a Bowater by Birtley fire door and survived with nothing more than cosmetic smoke damage.

“The tenant was very pleased because all the door needed was a wash and, despite the intensity of the fire, the flat and its contents were saved,” said Tony Laucius, building surveyor for Willmott Dixon, the maintenance contractor for the flats.

Bowater by Birtley’s 30-minute fire rated doors consist of an outer skin of grained and moulded GRP with an inner skin of grained GRP moulded skins in white with Vermiculite fire retardant inner core.

The door frame consists of a dedicated 70mm PVC-U profile extruded to BS EN12608 specifications with full steel reinforcement and flame retardant material while the locking mechanism consists of a multipoint with optional auto-locking facility to the requirements of BS6375 weather performance and security standards PAS 24 & Secured By Design.

While the doors installed in Bramber House are solid, these fire doors can also be fitted with a glazing cassette that complies with the requirements of BS6375 weather performance and security standards PAS 24 & Secured by Design.
